After the play-ins and Round of 16, we’re left with some juicy matchups as teams battle to outlast their opponents and punch their tickets to Championship Sunday.
A big shoutout to everyone who showed up early to help with setup, and to the dynamic duos who teamed up to break everything down afterward. Having reffed half the games last week, I figured it was time to give Richie a well-deserved break from preview duty and put the gloves back on myself. I’m writing this between shifts, so go easy on me if a typo or two sneaks through.
Lbs vs. Poutine
The Lbs are the only team to emerge from the play-ins, having edged out the Anklebiters to earn their spot in the quarterfinals. They’ve been playing some good hockey, but they’ll face a familiar and formidable opponent in Poutine.
These two teams split their regular-season series, with the Lbs taking an overtime thriller before Poutine responded with a convincing win later in the season. Expect both squads to bring their full rosters this time around, setting the stage for what could be a fantastic goaltending duel between Zisser and Green.
The Lbs have shown they can rise to the occasion in the postseason, but I have a feeling Mikey and the Machine still have last year’s championship defeat fresh in their minds. Losing by a single goal in the final has a way of leaving a lasting impression, and I suspect Poutine will be determined not to let history repeat itself.
This one should be tight throughout, but I’m giving the edge to Poutine. Look for a late empty-netter to put it away.
Prediction: Poutine wins 4–2.
Fresh Kills vs. Corlears Hookers
The Hookers put together an impressive regular season and have carried that momentum straight into the playoffs. Their win over a feisty Demons squad last week was another reminder of just how dangerous their scoring lines can be, particularly on the female/NB side of the roster.
Fresh Kills, meanwhile, are no strangers to playoff hockey. They pulled away from the Vertz last week before holding on to secure their place in the quarters. Both teams boast deep regular-season rosters, but at this stage of the competition, depth alone won’t be enough. Execution, chemistry, and timely contributions will separate the contenders from the rest.
As defending champions, Fresh Kills know what it takes to navigate these high-pressure games. I expect a similar performance to what we saw from them last week, with this matchup once again going down to the wire. In fact, I’m calling for 10 minutes of overtime.
From there, it’s anyone’s game. However, with Ariel unavailable, I think the Hookers will have the edge in a game where experience and composure could prove decisive. Call it an upset, but I’m backing Corlears Hookers to send the reigning champs home.
Prediction: Corlears Hookers win 5–4 in OT.
Filthier vs. Renaissance
Two Division 3 sides meet in the quarterfinals, but don’t let that fool you into thinking this one will lack fireworks.
Filthier looked sharp against Fuzz last week, combining an aggressive approach in the offensive zone with the discipline needed to protect a lead. If they can strike early and force Renaissance to chase the game, they may have a legitimate shot at pulling off the upset. That said, it could be a long afternoon for Doug between the pipes.
Renaissance, on the other hand, finished the regular season as the league’s highest-scoring team. A healthy portion of that production came from their core group, who will presumably be looking to make up for last year’s 24-hour pub crawl with a slightly more focused approach this time around. Of course, it is Halloween weekend, so anything is possible.
Here’s an interesting wrinkle: which team finished second in scoring this season? You guessed it—Filthier.
If James, the league’s all-time leading goal scorer, can summon the necessary new-dad strength and bury a few chances, Filthier could make things interesting. But Renaissance have the firepower, and I expect their experience and offensive depth to prove too much in the end.
Look for Rens to complete the season sweep, advance to the semifinals, and take another step toward their promotion to Division 2.
Prediction: Renaissance wins 5–2.
Mega Touch vs. Cobra Kai
If you’re looking for the game of the week, look no further.
Mega Touch survived an overtime thriller against an impressive Instant Karma side, while Cobra Kai will be eager to prove that the dojo is ready for another deep playoff run. Both teams finished with identical records, so the standings alone don’t tell the full story of what should be a closely contested matchup.
Mega Touch edged out Cobra Kai by a mere half-point in the standings to earn home-team status, but there’s one particularly troublesome detail for the top seed: Cobra Kai won both regular-season meetings. Neither game was a blowout, but the fact remains that CK have had Mega’s number when it counts.
Of course, the postseason is a different animal. Rosters change, matchups tighten, and the margin for error shrinks with every passing round. Sunday’s lineup decisions could play a major role in determining who advances.
I expect this one to be a back-and-forth battle with neither team willing to give an inch. With both sides evenly matched and a trip to the semifinals on the line, I’m calling for overtime to decide it.
Mega may have the home-team designation, but Cobra Kai have the regular-season receipts. Ultimately, I think Mega finds a way to turn the tables and survive another nail-biter.
Prediction: Mega Touch wins 4–3 in OT.
Hope everyone has a safe, fun, and slightly spooky Halloween weekend!
A couple of reminders before Sunday: we’re turning the clocks back, and the NYC Marathon will be taking place, so plan accordingly and give yourself a little extra time to get to the games.
And finally, a huge shoutout to all the BTSHer’s lacing up for the marathon. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or simply making it to the finish line, best of luck out there!
See you all at the rink. May the best teams survive the weekend and earn their place on Championship Sunday.
